Enrichment menu

The Secret Dog Garden enrichment menu

Food hidden around the area for your dog to find is weighed and will be no more than ¼ of your dog’s daily allowance based on their breed type and weight, and includes different tastes, textures and even temperatures!

The food we use is high quality and is listed below. Please note only some of these food types will be used and dietary needs are catered for.

Your dog should be fed as normal prior to your visit and not be overly hungry as this will lead to frustration looking for food, rather than a pleasant and natural experience.

Smell

Children’s toys

A variety of children’s toys and furniture which hold a great deal of super sniffy scent history!

Clothing

Old shoes, slippers, scarves, hats and gloves, collected from a wide range of people to vary the scent.

Animal scents

Scent clothes such as Alpaca, Sheep, Cow, plus horse brushes, shoes, rugs, head collars, saddle cloths, bridles, dog blankets, collars and nail clippers, plus a range of feathers including chicken, goose, swan and pheasant.

Tyres

Bicycle tyres and car tyres pick up miles of scent history!

Non-slip rugs & mats

Old rugs and door mats have great scent history and rugs are also different textures.

Other items

A range of used household items such as oven gloves, an old armchair, second hand musical instruments, logs, leaves and twigs collected from the woods, shells, pebbles and items found on the beach and more.

Plants

Lavender, Thyme and Valerian, scents from these plants have a known calming effect on dogs, plus Pansies which are edible and planted with consideration for aroma and visual stimulation with blue and yellow flowers, plus Elephant grass during the summer months for dogs to walk through, rub against, or chew.

Touch

Outdoor areas have different textures underfoot including gravel, wood and paving slabs. Indoor areas have non-slip mats and rugs made from a variety of materials including natural fur, nylon, synthetic wool and rubber. There are also hanging items such as scarves, beads, and old soft toys to brush against.

Sight

Dogs see in a colour range of blue and yellow, objects have been chosen with these colours to enhance visual stimulation as well as smell.

Hearing

Hanging bells, children’s rattles and toys will all make a sound when nudged with a nose, as well as paper to rustle through when foraging. Tall Elephant Grasses during the summer months which blow in the breeze and rustle.

Movement

Movement is an important consideration when planning the layout giving the dog choice to step over, onto, or avoid. All items are moveable and the set-up is based on the information given about your dog. On subsequent visits items can be added, or removed, dependent on your dog’s preference, and a new layout and experience can be planned as your dog becomes more comfortable in the environment and therefore more confident.

Notes

Not all these items will be used on your first visit, i.e., rattles and bells will be removed for the more nervous dog. Food items are not placed near animal scents to avoid a connection between the animal scent = treat! Your dog will be tired after their visit and should be given time to rest and sleep once they return home.

We hope you enjoy your visit!

Here is a little clip of a regular visitor, who knew exactly where he was going, having a sniff about.
